「championship」選手権大会、使い方を整理します。

私自身も何となく使ってしまっていた単語です。
生徒さんからの質問で、理解が部分的だったことに気づきました。「質問は宝」といつも感じます。今回もそうです。ありがとうございます！

One of my students asked me how to use the word "championship" the other day. I gave some examples then but I noticed my explanation was not enough afterward.
Not to miss this opportunity to make it clear, let me give definitions and usages here.


"championship" means

① a high level competition to decide who is the best, especially in a sport
(スポーツなどでチャンピオンを決めるためのハイレベルな競技会)

The world championship will be held in Canada next year.
　 (世界選手権大会が来年カナダで行われる)


② the position of being a champion
　(チャンピオンである地位)

She has held the championship for the past three years.
　(彼女はここ３年間、チャンピオンの座にいる)
